Let me mention now that, prior to our arrival in Paris, we had ordered in advance a packet of Paris Passes that helped us plan our adventure and, importantly, included not only Metro (subway) tickets but entrance fees that also allowed us faster access to many of the sites and museums through a preferred line of entry. I mention it in case you make a trip there as the passes helped with the otherwise mundane so we could enjoy the sites.
A little while later, John woke me up to see if I wanted to get some dinner. After a hot shower, I felt revived and we headed off a few blocks over to an area where the Concierge said we could find some local restaurants offering good food. As we approached we recognized it from our earlier walk that day. First we stopped for a drink on the street side of one cafe. Shortly another American couple sat near us and talked of their passion for Paris. They had come to spend three weeks exploring many museums and enjoying the food. Then we left to search for our dinner.

The following day we headed off on the Metro to tour Notre Dame Cathedral and Saint Chapelle - both famous religious venues originally built in the 12th and 13th centuries in Gothic style. They were equally impressive both inside and out not to mention the ancient history they represent. Lucky for us too, the beautiful stained glass windows of Saint Chapelle had in recent months finished a cleaning and renovation effort that took seven years! The golden sunshine now penetrating each panel to show off brilliant color and detail.
While contemplating our next move, we wandered over to a nearby cafe and thought, well we are in Paris so a glass of champagne was in order!

We set off that evening toward the same area where we discovered Le Barbiere. This time we opted for another small gem just down the street called 20 Eiffel. As we settled in and ordered, another couple were seated next to our table. They started up a conversation that ended up engaging us throughout our dinners. They were on holiday from Sweden and their two teenage children but reminisced enthusiastically about a long trip they had taken in the U.S. with their kids some years ago. It was a delightful evening for us until we stopped at our hotel bar for one last drink and received terrible service. Ah well, the waiter made up for it later…
Isle of St Louis and returning to our origination point. It was a pleasant start to our day. From there we took the Metro back toward The Louvre to reach a part of town where we needed to pick up
tickets for a bus tour. As we disembarked and headed through the lovely Tuilleries Gardens on foot, we were held back at the exit on the opposite side due to the start of a road race from the Place
Vendome that appeared to involve several thousand runners! Finally we made a dash as the crowd thinned, located our destination and retrieved our tickets. Then it was a short hike to pick up our bus. On the ride, we passed by some now familiar but also unfamiliar places and decided to disembark at the Arc de Triomphe. We used our passes to make our entry for the climb to the top. Today fog and stormy clouds started to roll in making for some dramatic views! After that we secured an ideal table at a nearby restaurant on the Champs Élysées with a view of the Arc and enjoyed more glasses of champagne over a delicious juicy hamburger and frites!
Up to now, I've mentioned The Eiffel Tower several times. As I noted earlier, it was a few short blocks from our hotel so we passed by it many times from many different angles. And of course, as tall as it is, it's also visible from many parts of central Paris. It's a beautiful structure in a very pretty setting surrounded by parklands and well kept residential buildings. There were some touts selling Tower replicas and even bottles of wine or champagne to enjoy at a picnic while gazing at the tower but they weren't intrusive. What I haven't mentioned are the long lines to get in to climb or take the lift to the top of the tower. In any case, we chose to enjoy The Eiffel Tower from the ground and did not make its ascent during our visit.
As the evening progressed we both acknowledged our tummies were still full from our indulgence at lunch, so instead of going out we decided to give the hotel restaurant/bar another try for just wine
and some light cheese perhaps. This time the same waiter took note of our arrival and took care to provide good, even excellent service. In the end he even introduced us to and picked up the tab for a
Japanese whiskey called Nikka that he claimed rivalled any superb scotch. He was right! It was quite a nice finish to our day.

For dinner that evening, John worked with the Concierge to select a special place and settled on L'Agape Gastronomes, a Michelin-starred elegant restaurant offering French cuisine. Both the meal and presentation were exquisite plus the service impeccable! A memorable way to celebrate his big birthday!
On our last day in Paris, since we weren't leaving for Singapore until that afternoon, we decided to explore the Maritime Museum. But, oops, we forgot to check the schedule and learned upon our arrival it was closed that day. Instead we walked around taking in more of the beautiful neighborhoods, the architecture and general ambience of the city of love and light. Then we happened upon a small park with a monument to the Americans who lost their lives volunteering to fight for France in WWII. It was a poignant reminder of darker times.
Meandering our way back to the hotel, we came upon a modern art museum with a special exhibition featuring Andy Warhol. With a shrug, we thought, why not? After paying for our tickets we wandered through the exhibit and with many more shrugs thought, this guy was both crazy and a master manipulator. Some may call his work art but mostly it seemed like an attempt to exploit and push the boundaries of how much wool he could pull over our eyes. Apparently, he was very successful at that!
So at last our Parisian adventure is ending. We very much enjoyed the infinite gorgeous architecture, scrumptious food and wine and found the people very friendly and helpful. But this didn't end with an easy slide toward home. No, instead we had quite a jolt after we passed through immigration and security at the airport when John suddenly realised he wasn't sure where his wallet was! It was last seen as we checked in at the British Airways desk but, after emptying his backpack several times and even returning to security where they also helped us search it was still missing. Security even helped us backtrack through immigration to the BA desk since that was our last sure sighting of it. Finally, with only a few minutes to spare before boarding, we gave up and started thinking about next steps. While waiting at the gate, I went to grab a bottle of water and when I returned, voila! John had his wallet in hand! He had once again decided to go through his backpack and found it at the very bottom of a very black space concealing it behind his sunglasses. Wow! What a relief and then we headed back to Singapore.
Thank you, my love for a most memorable adventure and au revoir to that very special city of Paris!
